Maria's Story

woman_profile_smallerMaria* is a Spanish speaking immigrant living in this country on a green card. Her husband of 10 years, was physically, verbally and emotionally abusive. He used her immigrant status as a tool to control and manipulate her. On a nightly basis, he would make her sleep on the floor in the corner of the room, while he slept in their queen size bed. On night, her husband escalated his behavior when he attempted to run her over with his car. Police responded to the home to find a terrified non-English speaking woman. The officer immediately called DART II and an advocate responded and offered resources and support.

As it turned out, Maria was very ready to leave her abusive husband but after years of having her citizenship threatened, she believe he could have her deported. The advocate was able to explain to Maria that her husband did not have the power to have her deported since she was here legally on a green card and she could even get a U-Visa from the courts. It was with this reassuring from the advocate and from the District Attorney's office that Maria agreed to assist the prosecution.

Her husband, now terrified that she was going to testify, plead guilty to all charges and was sentenced to one years probation, $200 fines and cost, no contact with the victim for one year, 24 hours of community service, domestic violence counseling. Maria is now able to live her life in peace and recently got a new job. She is well on her way to opening a new and healthier chapter in her life.
