As it turned out, Maria was very ready to leave her abusive husband but after years of having her citizenship threatened, she believe he could have her deported. The advocate was able to explain to Maria that her husband did not have the power to have her deported since she was here legally on a green card and she could even get a U-Visa from the courts. It was with this reassuring from the advocate and from the District Attorney's office that Maria agreed to assist the prosecution. Her husband, now terrified that she was going to testify, plead guilty to all charges and was sentenced to one years probation, $200 fines and cost, no contact with the victim for one year, 24 hours of community service, domestic violence counseling. Maria is now able to live her life in peace and recently got a new job.
